Morning visit Sigiriya Rock Fortress. (A UNESCO World Heritage site) .The rock is an inselberg, which dominates the landscape and was both a military refuge as well as an aesthetic refuge for king who was a patron of the arts. Initially Sigiriya became world famous for the frescos found on the western surface of the rock about 100 miters above the ground level. Ancient gardens found at the foot of the rock could be considered as the one of the surviving gardens created with the country in the 5th century AD.

Afterwards visit ancient city of Polonnaruwa. The ancient city of Polonnaruwa has traces of early settlement. Towards the end of the Anuradhapura period, Polonnaruwa was regularly visited by royalty and monks whenever Anuradhapura was in siege or was overcrowded. Remains of the city walls and ancient buildings belonging to this period are seen among the ruins in Polonnaruwa. The life blood of the Polonnaruwa civilizations was indeed water, and its management was critical for human use. Parakramabahu I philosophized on this aspect when he said, "Let not a drop of water that falls on the good earth flow into the sea without serving man:" The ingenuity of the science of water storage, and the conservation of its use, is clearly stamped in every city of ancient times. Polonnaruwa is no exception. While the sea of Parakramabahu obtains its water from a branch of the Mahaveli Ganga, this Ambanganga is replenished from the upper ridges of the Mahaveli Ganga with the water being carried over a 70- mile course.
